Understanding the Formats
Pure Hackmons
The most unrestricted Hackmons format. Any Pokemon can have any move, ability, and item combination that's legal in the game's code.
Balanced Hackmons
A more balanced take on Hackmons with bans on the most broken combinations. Popular on Pokemon Showdown.
Wondrous Hackmons
A variant format with its own unique ruleset and metagame.
PH No Nerfs
A custom Pure Hackmons format where every Pokemon is at its peak across all generations. Mewtwo has 154 SpDef, Parental Bond's second hit deals 50%, Psychic has 95 BP with a 33.2% chance to lower SpA and SpDef.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Hackmons?
Hackmons refers to a family of Pokemon formats where the traditional restrictions on moves, abilities, and stats are removed or relaxed. Players can create Pokemon sets that would be impossible in standard formats. Competitively, Pure Hackmons refers to a format where anything directly hackable onto a Pokemon set and is usable through local battles is fair game.
Why does this website exist?
Hackmons Hub was created to centralize resources, tools, and community knowledge for Hackmons formats. While Pokemon Showdown hosts competitive battles, there wasn't a dedicated hub for:
- ROM-based Pure Hackmons (Gen 1-5 on cartridge/emulator)
- Specialized tools like EV Optimizer, Team Builder, and Damage Calculator
- Comprehensive moveset database and viability rankings
- Community discussion forums and tournament organization
This site bridges the gap between Showdown's competitive scene and the ROM hacking community.
What is "No Nerfs"?
PH No Nerfs (PHNN) is a custom Pure Hackmons format where every Pokemon, move, ability, and item uses its strongest version across all generations. This creates a unique metagame that differs from both standard PH and competitive formats.
Examples: Mewtwo has Gen 1's 154 Special Defense, Parental Bond's second hit deals 50% damage (pre-nerf), and Psychic has a 33.2% chance to lower both SpA and SpD. This format is popular for ROM hacks and theoretical teambuilding.
How do I submit movesets to the database?
We welcome moveset submissions from the community! Here's how to contribute:
- Join our Discord: The easiest way is through our Hackmons Hub Discord
- Post in the Forum: Create a thread in the appropriate format category with your moveset details
- Include required info: Pokemon name, format (PH/BH/PHNN), moves, ability, item, EVs, nature, and a brief description of the set's purpose
- Moderator review: Our team will review and add approved sets to the database
What do the various tags mean?
LC (Little Cup):
Little Cup. This is a format where baby Pokemon (the first stage in a 3-stage evolution line) are set to level 5 and battle with other baby Pokemon. Pokemon are assigned the LC category if they are a first out of a 3-stage evolutionary line in their respective generation. Having this tag does NOT mean the Pokemon is 'legal' in the Smogon format - some (such as maybe Abra) may be banned depending on the generation, but retain the LC tag so that they can be categorized according to our definition.
MC (Middle Cup):
Middle Cup, the stage 2 in a 3-stage evolution line. Charmeleon, Wartortle, etc. I could be wrong, but many years ago there was a format where MC Pokemon could battle each other. Please note that, while Pikachu is technically MC, it is not flagged as MC in Gen 1 because Pichu did not exist back then. Therefore, these tags are generation-specific.
NFE (Not Fully Evolved):
Not Fully Evolved. While technically LC and MC should also be NFE, NFE for the purposes of our database refer to all other NFE Pokemon, i.e. first stage of a 2-stage evolutionary line. This is just a placeholder for those Pokemon where LC and MC don't fit. The reason this filter exists really is to establish which Pokemon are FE (Fully Evolved = NOT NFE), for the purposes of logic sorting.
Legendary:
Every legendary according to Bulbapedia.
Mythical:
Every mythical according to Bulbapedia.
Pseudo:
Every pseudo-legendary according to Bulbapedia.
Super:
This is a blanket terminology made up by the creator of this website to refer to alternate Pokemon forms that are directly superior to the regular forms (i.e. Blade form Aegislash does NOT fit this criteria because its base stat total, BST, is not higher than the regular Shield form), and generally cannot exist outside of save modifications. This includes Mega evolutions, but also refers to Primal forms, Ultra forms, Hoopa-Unbound, Crowned forms, and Eternamax. While there is no hard-coded definition of what determines a Pokemon to be "Super", it was easier for us to categorize Mega Pokemon with certain other Pokemon of the same grandeur. Essentially, you'll know one when you see one.
Pokestar:
This refers to the Pokemon that can be found at Nintendo Fandom Wiki. These Pokemon exist in the Gen 5 series and cannot be obtained in any other generation outside of those DS games.
Smogon Tiers:
Smogon tiers according to smogon.com:
- AG: Anything Goes
- Ubers: Mewtwo, etc.
- OU: Overused
- UU: Underused
Note: Why isn't Shaymin OU in Gen 4? These tags were assigned based on Showdown's tier listings. Some Pokemon are labeled "OU by technicality" - meaning they weren't used enough to be formally tiered but are too strong for lower tiers. For the sake of simplicity and clarity, we have decided not to include "OU by technicality" as a tag. As a result, some Pokemon that are too good for UU may not have a Smogon tier tag at all.
Meta:
This is a unique flag given to certain Pokemon in each generation that has been deemed "worthy" of competitive usage based on expert opinion from the Hackmons community but mainly taken from Viability Rankings. You can view the direct source of these viability rankings as contributed by prominent figures in the hackmons community.
Note: Why aren't Shedinja and all Fire-types given the Meta tag? Sturdy Shedinja and Burn Up strategies have been discussed ad nauseam in competitive communities. Due to their fringe usage and the fact that they are easy to answer, this website has decided to agree with the competitive community and NOT include them as competitive. The same reasoning applies to Double Shock and Electric-types.
Comp:
This tag is assigned to certain abilities and items that have been used frequently or mentioned in the Viability Rankings. It helps identify which non-Pokemon elements are competitively relevant in each generation.
Note: No abilities in Gen 3 were given a Comp tag because abilities are assigned to individual Pokemon and cannot be modified in that generation. Ironically, the best "ability" in Gen 3 Pure Hackmons might be no ability at all - you can actually hack a Slaking to have no ability!
Where can I find viability rankings?
Viability rankings help you understand which Pokemon, moves, and strategies are most effective in each format:
Is this website affiliated with Pokemon Showdown or Smogon?
No. Hackmons Hub is an independent, community-run project. While we link to and reference Pokemon Showdown and Smogon resources extensively (they're invaluable to the competitive community), we are not officially affiliated with either organization. This site focuses specifically on Hackmons formats and serves as a complementary resource to the broader competitive Pokemon ecosystem.
